2011 Dacia Sandero Experiencing Engine Failure, ABS/DSC Issues, and Lighting Malfunctions: Possible Faulty Generator?

Weak battery when starting the engine

ABS/DSC system is not working

Engine shuts off by itself

Dim or flickering lights

Hey! I got a 2011 Gasoline-powered Dacia Sandero, clocked about 127,964 KM, and recently it's been acting up. Few things to note: the engine has a habit of dying on me unusually, the ABS/DSC doesn't seem to be functioning right, startup seems slow due to a weak battery, and my lights are playing disco without my permission. Got a sneaky suspicion this might be tied to a faulty Generator. Wondering if anyone here's run into the same sneaky gremlins? And could use advice on mechanics you trust - had a rough go with my last one. Thanks in advance!

Hey! I had a pretty similar issue with my 2014 Dacia Duster, with a mileage just around 118,500 KM. My beast was also showing similar signs, and yes, your suspicion is spot on, it was indeed the faulty generator causing the ruckus. Last time I hauled it to the garage, the guys there confirmed my suspicion. The generator had given up, it was not providing adequate power to run the electricals, causing the engine to die unusually, entire electrical system including ABS/DSC to malfunction, and the headlights flickering like a dodgy disco ball. The slow startup with a weak battery, yep, it's another symptom; the generator wasn't charging the battery properly, you see. So, in my case, the generator needed to be replaced to fix all the issues, it's serious enough I'd say, the car's reliability really takes a hit. Can't comment on your local mechanics, but my guys did a good job. Let's hope you find a good one too. Take care, and cheers for getting it fixed soon!

Hey there! Ahh, that sounds exactly like what's happening with my Sandero. I'm relieved the ghost in the machine has a name - the generator! Seriously though, your explanation makes a lot of sense and if our probs are that similar, I reckon I've got a wayward generator as well. Quick question if you don't mind. Trying to wrap my head around the cost here. Could you remember what dent this put in your wallet when you had it fixed and replaced? Also, since the generator issue, any other gremlins you've encountered with your Duster? Thanks a bunch!

Hey! Yep, that pesky generator issue can be a real pain in the ass. As far as costs go, it did shave a few notes off my wallet I must confess. The generator replacement was around 960€. Yep, you read that right. Bit on the steep side, but hey, what can you do? And wanna know the best part? Since getting that generator issue squared away by my mechanic, the beast is back to its best behavior. No new goblins, gremlins, or any kind of mischievous sprite since then! Hope your Sandero pulls through just as well! Good luck!

Hey! Righto, we are talking about chunky money here, but your rationalisation calms my worries a bit. Given the nightmares I am having with my misfiring disco ball up front and the resurrection games my engine is playing, it's likely worth every penny! I'll start hunting for a solid mechanic this week and put this generator hocus pocus to bed. Nice to hear your Duster is behaving, gives me hope for my beloved Sandero. I'll keep the group posted on how it turns out! Thanks a tonne for sharing your experience, couldn't be more grateful! Cheers!

Let our mechanics help you!
