350Z auto transmission shifting issues

Alright Z-fam, I'm pulling my hair out! My 2002 Nissan 350Z (gas engine) with 120626 km is throwing a fit. The auto tranny is acting possessed. It's shifting all kinds of crazy, the tranny light is on, and sometimes it just refuses to shift properly. Feels like it's stuck in emergency mode. Could it be the worn out transmission oil and undervoltage in the vehicle, or is my beloved Z doomed?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Nissan 350Z was experiencing erratic shifting issues, with the transmission light on and sometimes refusing to shift properly, possibly due to worn-out transmission oil and undervoltage. The problem included slipping between gears, especially at higher speeds. The solution involved a transmission flush and addressing an electrical glitch causing undervoltage, which resolved the shifting issues.

I had similar shifting problems with my Nissan 350Z. The diagnostic pointed towards a potential transmission issue. Does the 'implausible shifting behavior' include slipping between gears, especially at higher speeds? A transmission flush might help temporarily, but if the undervoltage is the primary cause, addressing that first is crucial.

Slipping is definitely part of the party, especially when I try to get on it. When you say 'addressing the undervoltage', what exactly did you do? Was it a simple fix, or did it require major surgery?

In my case, the undervoltage was indeed the root cause. The error code pointed to a faulty voltage regulator. Because of the potential severity of the issue, and my limited mechanical experience, I recommend that you visit your mechanic. Have the car checked by a professional.

Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out, it was a combination of old transmission fluid and a minor electrical glitch causing the undervoltage. A transmission flush and a quick fix on the electrical side set me back 240€, but she's shifting smooth as butter now!
