A3 Transmission Grinding: Sensor Fault or Major Repairs

My A3 from 2022 (gas, 6360km) started acting up with transmission issues last week. The transmission warning light came on, and the gearbox is shifting rough with grinding sounds. It went into some kind of safety mode too. After my last not-so-great mechanic visit, I want to check if anyone had similar problems, especially with a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. The error code is stored but I have not read it yet. Did you experience something similar? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2022 A3 experiencing transmission issues, including rough shifting, grinding sounds, and a warning light, potentially due to a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. A similar case with a 2019 A4 revealed that low transmission fluid levels can cause false sensor readings, leading to these symptoms. The solution involved checking and correcting the transmission fluid level, conducting a full diagnostic scan, and clearing fault codes. Proper diagnosis and timely repair were crucial to prevent severe transmission damage, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and fluid checks.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Had a similar situation with my 2019 A4 last year. The transmission fault symptoms matched exactly, rough shifting, grinding, and limp mode activation. The transmission pressure sensor was showing incorrect readings, triggering the warning light. The root cause was actually simpler than expected, the transmission oil level was critically low, causing the pressure switch to give false readings. The transmission sensor was functioning correctly but responding to the low fluid condition. The repair involved: Proper transmission fluid level check, System pressure test using a pressure gauge, Topping up with the correct specification fluid, Full transmission diagnostic scan, Clearing fault codes Important: This could have led to severe transmission damage if driven longer in this condition. Low fluid levels can quickly destroy internal components when the transmission runs dry. Getting it fixed immediately was crucial. Worth noting that transmission pressure sensor faults often indicate fluid-related issues before pointing to sensor failure. A proper diagnostic scan will help determine if its truly a sensor problem or a symptom of low fluid level.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. These oil pressure sensor issues and transmission problems are quite troubling. My issue turned out similar, low fluid causing false sensor readings. Getting a proper pressure gauge test really helped identify the real problem. I am curious, do you remember the final repair cost for your case? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Would be helpful to know if any other transmission sensor faults popped up later. Any unexpected costs or repairs needed beyond the initial fix? With transmission issues, sometimes one problem leads to another.

After getting it properly diagnosed and repaired, my transmission has been running perfectly for over a year now. The transmission sensor fault cleared completely after fixing the oil level problem, and no other warning lights have appeared since. The total repair came to 365 Euro, which covered the diagnostic work, fixing the gearbox oil level, and a thorough system check. This price was fair considering the potential damage that could have occurred if left unfixed. The mechanic did a pressure switch test during the repair to confirm no additional transmission issues were present. No other repairs were needed beyond addressing the low fluid situation. A proper diagnosis from the start helped avoid any cascade of transmission problems. The key was catching it early, low transmission fluid can trigger various sensor faults and cause much more expensive damage if ignored. Regular transmission maintenance since then has kept everything working smoothly.

I finally went to the shop last week to get this sorted. Just like in your case, the transmission fault was mainly due to low fluid causing pressure sensor issues. The mechanic ran a full diagnostic test which confirmed the oil level problem. The repair bill came to 420 Euro including: Transmission pressure test, Oil level correction, System diagnostics, Clearing the fault codes Been driving for a few days now and the transmission shifts perfectly again. No more grinding sounds or warning lights. The pressure sensor readings are back to normal. Definitely learned my lesson about getting transmission issues checked right away before they cause bigger problems. The mechanic also showed me how to check the transmission oil level between services. Regular fluid checks seem crucial to prevent these transmission sensor faults from happening again.
