Active hood fault

I've got a 2003 Ford Escape with a gasoline engine and I'm running into an odd issue. The message "Active hood fault" keeps popping up on the on-board computer, and the airbag warning light is constantly on. I pulled the codes, and it confirms an active hood fault. Strangely, it looks like the spring actuators have also been triggered. I'm suspecting a faulty acceleration sensor, anyone else seen this before?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Ford Escape owner experienced an "Active hood fault" message and a constant airbag warning light, with codes confirming the fault and triggered spring actuators. The suspected cause was a faulty acceleration sensor. It was suggested to check wiring and connectors, as faulty connections can trigger false alarms. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by replacing the defective acceleration sensor at a workshop, which cleared all errors.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I also own an Escape, although I haven't encountered the exact problem you're describing. However, I do recall reading about similar scenarios related to the active hood system. Have you checked the wiring and connectors associated with the acceleration sensors in the front of the vehicle? Faulty connections can sometimes trigger false alarms and store related errors. Also, has the car been involved in any minor front-end impacts lately, as that could be a cause?

Good thought on the wiring! I'll take a look for anything obvious. When you read about similar scenarios, did they point to a specific component failure, or was it more of a connection/wiring issue? The car hasn't been in any accidents recently, so I'm not expecting any surprises there.

From what I recall, the cases I read about often pointed towards a defective acceleration sensor. Given that your spring actuators have triggered, and you're getting a consistent error code, it seems quite plausible in your case. I would advise against trying to repair the active hood on your own; I recommend taking your car to a workshop as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot for the input! I think you're right about the sensor. I bit the bullet and took it to the shop. They confirmed it was the acceleration sensor and replaced it for 315€. All errors are gone now. Appreciate the help!
