Altima Torque Converter Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Nissan Altima is experiencing issues with the check engine light and transmission indicator light, along with gearbox slipping, uneven shifting, and grinding noises. Error codes suggest a defective torque converter lock-up clutch. Symptoms like engine surging at highway speeds further indicate a torque converter fault. A workshop visit confirmed the diagnosis, leading to a costly repair.

Yes, I noticed that a few times. The engine surges slightly. Is that typical with the torque converter?

Indeed, those symptoms, including the engine surge, strongly suggest a converter fault. With nearly 200,000 kilometers, wear and tear is inevitable. A workshop visit seems advisable; they'll confirm and quote the repair.

Thanks for confirming my fears. I took it to a shop and they found the automatic transmission converter was defective, just like the error code suggested. The repair cost was 2120€ Ouch.

A defective torque converter, you say? That sounds suspiciously like a big problem. Does the engine seem to surge unexpectedly at highway speeds, almost like it's briefly losing power?
