Cooling system seemed normal before the overheating started. No strange noises from what I could tell. Was your Astra’s issue definitely the flap motor itself, or something else in the system?

Yeah, after a lot of head-scratching, it was the flap motor. The flaps weren't opening and closing properly, causing all sorts of temperature control chaos. Seems like you're on the right track with the active air flap. Honestly, I'd take it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed and fixed. Cost me a small fortune back then.

Thanks for the insight. I'll get it checked out at a shop. Diagnosis confirmed the flap motor issue, repair cost is quoted at 590€. Appreciate the help!
