Black smoke and power loss in BMW 3 Series: experience with NOx catalytic converter charging

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I drive a 2009 BMW 3 series gasoline with 221,741 km mileage. Unfortunately I have problems with the car: black smoke when accelerating, engine light on, loss of power, jerking when accelerating and poor fuel efficiency. I suspect it is due to the NOx catalytic converter being heavily loaded. Has anyone ever had similar problems? How did it go with your mechanic? My last experience wasn't that great unfortunately. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey, I understood exactly what you mean. I drive a 2006 BMW 5 Series diesel and had similar symptoms. When accelerating there was this jerking and the black smoke also came out. Then the engine light came on and the performance dropped sharply. My first suspicion was also the NOx catalytic converter, but after a thorough examination in the garage it turned out to be the injectors. It was a serious problem, but fortunately it could be fixed. Hope that helps you.

Hey, that sounds a lot like my 3 Series, thanks for your reply! Unpleasant story with the injectors - not easy symptoms. Can you remember how much it cost to repair the injectors? And has anything happened again since the repair or has your BMW been running smoothly again since then? Thanks again!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! Yes, the injectors were a pain in the ass, but since then my BMW has been top fit again. I'm really glad about that. As for the cost, I had to fork out €1550 to fix the problem with the NOx catalytic converter - you know, the one with the heavy loading. Quite a chunk, but it was definitely worth it. The car is now running like a champ and I haven't had any further problems since my visit to the garage. I hope everything works out for you too!

Wow, that's no mean feat! But I'm glad to hear that your BMW is running well again. I think I really need to take mine to the mechanic and have it checked. Hopefully I'll get it sorted soon. And that's what happens when you think you've seen it all... But well, thank you very much for your help and information! Have a good trip with your 5 Series! Bye!

Hi Nivas, a rough running engine and a NOx sensor error could indeed be related to a problem with your catalytic converter. However, it could also be due to a faulty NOx sensor itself or other issues like fuel injectors or spark plugs. I would recommend starting with a simple check of the NOx sensor and if it's functioning properly. If the problem persists, it would be best to have a mechanic perform a thorough inspection to pinpoint the exact cause. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
