BMW 8 Door Sensors Failing, Locking System Nightmare

Hi all, my 2022 BMW 8 Diesel has been acting up lately with door-related issues. Getting error messages about doors not being closed, plus the central locking system isn't working properly, can't lock/unlock doors and the auto-lock while driving is dead. I suspect it might be related to door contact sensors, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar problems? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Looking to hear about your experiences before taking it to the workshop.

Summary of the thread

A 2022 BMW 8 Diesel is experiencing door-related issues, including error messages about doors not being closed and a malfunctioning central locking system. The problem is suspected to be related to door contact sensors. A similar issue in a BMW 7 series was resolved by addressing a faulty wiring connection to a door sensor, suggesting that the problem might be due to moisture in the wiring harness. A battery reset is suggested as a potential quick fix before taking the car to a workshop.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW 7 series Diesel last year (I also own a BMW 5). I have some experience working on cars, but door electronics aren't really my thing. The symptoms were exactly like yours, unusual door warning messages and central locking going haywire. Took it to my regular workshop and turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection to one of the door sensors. They had to replace some cables and check all the connections. Total bill was 95 Euro and it's been working perfectly since then. Before you head to the shop though, could you tell us: Which door is giving you trouble specifically? Are you getting any specific error codes? Did this start suddenly or gradually? This might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Hey there, thanks for sharing your experience! My car's at 29424 KM from the latest service. To answer your questions, it's mainly the rear passenger door giving me grief, though the central locking issue affects all doors. No specific error codes, just those generic "door open" warnings on the dash. It started pretty suddenly, like overnight. Was working fine one evening, then next morning, boom, problems. Hearing about your wiring issue gives me hope it might be something similarly straightforward. Good to know it was a relatively simple fix for you. I'm planning to take it in next week, but wanted to get some real-world feedback first. Really appreciate your detailed reply!

Hey again! I'm back after seeing your response about the rear passenger door. You know what's really interesting? My issue also started super suddenly, went to bed with a perfectly fine car, woke up to a mess of warning lights! Talk about déjà vu. Since I've already dealt with this on my 7 series, here's another tip I didn't mention before: before taking it to the shop, I tried disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the electronics. Didn't fix my problem, but it's worth a shot, sometimes these modern cars just need a good old-fashioned reboot. 29424 KM isn't much at all, my issue happened around 45000 KM. The fact that it's your rear passenger door specifically really does sound like the same wiring problem I had. In my case, they found that some moisture had gotten into the wiring harness between the door and the frame, causing weird electrical gremlins. Keep us posted on what your mechanic finds! I'm really curious to see if it's the same issue. And hey, fingers crossed it's just wiring like mine was, way better than having to replace entire door modules or sensors.

Thanks so much for the additional info and the battery reset tip! I'll definitely give that a try tonight, nothing to lose by attempting a reboot, right? It's really reassuring to hear your story was so similar, especially with the sudden onset of problems. Makes me feel better about the whole situation. I had no idea moisture could sneak into the wiring harness like that, but it makes total sense. Actually, now that you mention it, we did have some heavy rain recently... could be connected. I'm really hoping it turns out to be a simple wiring fix like yours was. I'll definitely update this thread once I get it checked out next week. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's super helpful having some real-world insight before heading to the workshop. Keeping my fingers crossed for a straightforward fix like yours!
