BMW i8 Air Suspension Failure, Owner Seeks Help & Costs

Air Suspension Issues, Need advice on 2016 BMW i8 Hey everyone! My i8 (105k km, hybrid) started acting weird lately. The suspension won't lift anymore and the car's noticeably leaning. Getting error messages in the dash along with reduced engine power. Headlights are misaligned and suspension warning light is on. Pretty sure it's the air suspension compressor but had some sketchy experiences with mechanics lately. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their i8? What was the actual problem and how much did repairs cost? Any recommendations for dealing with this? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The owner of a 2016 BMW i8 is experiencing air suspension issues, including the suspension not lifting, the car leaning, and warning lights on the dashboard. The suspected cause is a faulty air suspension compressor. Another owner shared a similar experience, where the problem was due to a faulty connection in the air suspension control module and a worn-out compressor, suggesting that certified BMW service centers are best equipped to handle such issues. Ultimately, the i8 owner discovered a cracked air line and electrical issues in the control module, which were resolved at a certified service center, restoring the car's performance.

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW i3s Hybrid last month. The symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing, uneven ride height, warning lights, and misaligned headlights. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty connection in the air suspension control module, along with a worn-out compressor. The connector had corroded over time, causing intermittent failures. The mechanic found moisture had gotten into the wiring harness, causing the connection issues. The repair involved replacing the compressor unit and rewiring the control module connections. It was definitely a serious job that required specialized diagnostic equipment. The whole system needed to be recalibrated after the repair. I'd strongly suggest getting it checked at a certified BMW service center rather than a general mechanic. These hybrid systems are pretty complex, and proper diagnostic tools are essential. The symptoms you're describing are pretty much textbook for air suspension control module failure or compressor issues.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That really helps since I've been worried about taking it to the wrong place. Sounds like we had pretty much the same issues going on. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was? Also curious if you've had any other suspension-related problems pop up since getting it fixed? Just want to know what I might be in for down the road.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. After seeing the BMW certified mechanic, it turned out to be much simpler (and cheaper!) than I expected. It was just a faulty cable connection to the air suspension compressor, nothing major like I initially feared. Only cost me 95 € to fix, which was such a relief after imagining the worst! Since getting it sorted, the suspension's been working perfectly, no more weird leaning, warning lights, or misaligned headlights. The car's back to riding smooth as silk. Haven't had a single suspension issue pop up in the months since the repair. Really glad I went with the certified service center rather than trying to save a few bucks at a regular garage. Sometimes these hybrid systems just need someone who knows exactly what they're looking at. Seems like these connection problems aren't too uncommon with our models, but at least they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once diagnosed properly. Hope this helps put your mind at ease a bit! Let us know how your repair goes.

Thanks so much for all the details! I finally got my i8 checked out and wanted to share what happened. Took your advice and went to a certified place. The tech found it was actually the air line that had a tiny crack, plus some electrical gremlins in the control module. Labor was the biggest chunk of the bill since they had to take apart quite a bit to access everything. Not as cheap as your repair, but still way better than I feared. The whole thing set me back about 500 bucks. Been driving it for a couple weeks now and everything's working perfectly. The ride height's back to normal, no more warning lights, and those misaligned headlights are fixed too. Such a relief to have it sorted! Really appreciate everyone's input here, definitely helped me avoid some potential headaches with unqualified mechanics. Nothing worse than someone messing around with these systems when they don't know what they're doing. Lesson learned: always go to the specialists for these high-tech issues!
