BMW X2 Engine Shutdowns: Warning Signs & Solutions

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2022 BMW X2 (gas engine). The start-stop system stopped working, then the engine started out of nowhere shutting off while driving. Getting error messages and there's a warning light on the dash. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would really appreciate hearing about your experience, especially what the workshop found and how they fixed it. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2022 BMW X2 owner is experiencing engine shutdowns and warning lights, with the start-stop system malfunctioning. A possible cause suggested is a discharged battery, as similar symptoms were resolved by replacing the battery in another BMW model. The owner plans to have the battery checked and replaced if necessary, hoping this will resolve the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I actually went through something very similar with my 2020 BMW X1 last year. I'd say I have some experience working with cars, but I'm no expert. When my X3-owning recommended his workshop, I took my car in because I was having those exact same symptoms, unusual shutdowns and warning lights going crazy. Turns out my battery was severely discharged and needed replacement. The whole thing set me back 290 Euro, but it fixed all the issues completely. Could you share more details about when these problems started and if you've noticed any other electrical issues? Also, what's your current mileage? This info would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem. Stay safe and keep us posted!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car's only at 15566 KM and just had its latest service, so I was pretty surprised when this started happening. The battery theory makes a lot of sense actually, now that you mention it, I've noticed my radio taking longer to start up lately too. Definitely going to book it in at the workshop to get it checked out. Really hoping it's just the battery and nothing more serious. Thanks again for the tip, will update once I know what's causing it!

Hey again! Glad you found my battery suggestion helpful. The symptoms you described with the radio are exactly what I experienced before everything went south with my X1. Even with low mileage, batteries can still act up, especially if you do lots of short trips or the car sits unused for periods of time. Just to add to my earlier experience, before I got mine fixed, I also noticed the power windows seemed a bit sluggish, and sometimes the central locking would act weird. The workshop told me modern BMWs are super sensitive to battery voltage, and even a slightly weak battery can trigger all sorts of weird behavior. Since your mileage is even lower than mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 25000 KM), I'm even more convinced it's probably battery-related. The good news is it's a relatively straightforward fix. Just make sure they use the right battery spec and get it properly coded to the car. Keep us updated on what the workshop finds. I'm really curious to know if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for all the extra details! You're really putting my mind at ease. Come to think of it, I have been doing tons of short trips lately, and the car did sit unused for a couple of weeks when I was sick last month. And yes, now that you mention it, I've noticed the windows being a bit slow too, just didn't connect the dots! I'll definitely ask the workshop about the battery coding you mentioned. Actually managed to get an appointment for tomorrow morning, so I won't have to wait too long to find out what's wrong. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this, it's super helpful knowing what to expect and it makes me feel a lot better about the whole situation. Will post an update once I get it sorted. Thanks again for being so thorough with your advice!
