Thanks for sharing your X3 experience! My X4 is running at 174760 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. Haven't noticed any other electrical issues besides the central locking problem. Everything else seems to work fine, windows, mirrors, and other electronics are running smoothly. Did your mechanic mention if this is a common issue with BMW models from around this time? Just trying to figure out if I should be preparing for any other potential electrical problems down the line.
Hey again! Thanks for providing those details about your X4. You know, when I had the issue with my X3, my mechanic did mention that these central locking problems can pop up in BMWs from our generation, especially once they hit higher mileage. Mine was around 155,000 KM when it happened. That's actually good news that you're not seeing any other electrical issues! In my case, before the central locking failed completely, I did notice that sometimes the locks would work with a slight delay, like a second or two after pressing the key fob. Did you notice anything like that before it stopped working entirely? The mechanic told me these issues often start with the wiring harness degrading over time, it's just normal wear and tear really. But the good thing is that once it's fixed properly, it usually stays fixed. Mine hasn't given me any trouble since the repair last year. Since your car just had a service, I'm a bit surprised they didn't catch any early warning signs. But then again, these things can sometimes fail pretty suddenly. If you're taking it in for repairs, might be worth asking them to check the whole locking system wiring while they're at it, could save you another workshop visit down the line!
Appreciate the detailed follow-up! Actually, now that you mention it, I did notice some delayed responses from the central locking system about a month before it completely failed. I just brushed it off thinking it was the key fob battery getting weak, so I even changed that, but obviously that wasn't the real issue. You've given me some good pointers to discuss with my mechanic. I'll definitely ask them to do a thorough check of the wiring harness when I take it in. It's really helpful to know that once fixed properly, it should stay resolved. The repair cost you mentioned sounds reasonable too, was worried it might be some major electronic unit replacement that would cost a fortune! Think I'll book it in for next week. Better to get it sorted before it potentially causes any other issues. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful in understanding what I might be dealing with!
Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X3 last year. My X3 also had central locking problems, super annoying when you're trying to lock/unlock the doors and nothing happens! Took it to my regular workshop and they found that the wiring connection to the central locking control unit was damaged. The plug was loose and some cables were worn. They had to replace the connection and reprogram the system. Cost me 95 Euro and it's been working perfectly since then. Just curious, have you noticed any other electrical issues? Also, what's the mileage on your X4? Might help me remember more details from my experience that could be useful for your case. In BMWs, these electrical gremlins can sometimes be related to other systems too, so would be good to know if you've spotted anything else acting up.
