BMW X6 Speedometer Warning & Headlight Alignment Issues

Hey everyone! My 2015 BMW X6 has been acting up lately. The speedometer warning light is on, there's an error stored in the system, and the low beam headlights are misaligned (pointing too high/low). I suspect it might be a headlight range control issue, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what exactly the workshop did to fix it. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2015 BMW X6 is experiencing a speedometer warning light and misaligned low beam headlights, suspected to be due to a headlight range control issue. A similar case with a BMW X5 involved a faulty servomotor in the headlight assembly, which required replacement and recalibration. The suggested solution is to have the servomotor checked and potentially replaced, especially since the issue worsens during night driving on bumpy roads. It is also advised to inspect both headlights, as problems with one can indicate potential issues with the other.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2013 BMW X5 last year (I have some experience working on cars as a hobby). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, warning lights and misaligned headlights. Mine turned out to be a faulty servomotor in the headlight assembly. Took it to my trusted workshop and they diagnosed it straight away. They had to replace the servomotor unit completely, wasn't cheap at all, cost me around 1040 Euro including labor. But it fixed the issue completely, and I haven't had any problems since. They also recalibrated the headlight system after the replacement. Before I can give more specific advice, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, does the issue happen with both headlights or just one side? Have you noticed if it gets worse in certain weather conditions? By the way, the X6 and X5 of that generation share a lot of components, so this might be exactly what you're dealing with. Let me know those details and I might be able to help further!

Thanks for your detailed response! My X6 actually just had its latest service about 2 months ago at 143385 KM. What's interesting is that my mechanic didn't mention anything about the servomotor during the checkup. Did the replacement of your servomotor take long? I'm hoping to get this fixed before my upcoming long drive. Also noticed the issue seems worse during night driving, especially on bumpy roads. Was this similar to your experience?

Hey again! Yes, I totally get what you're saying about the night driving and bumpy roads, that's exactly how mine acted up too! Those bumps really seemed to mess with the alignment, right? The servomotor replacement on my X5 took about 3-4 hours. The most time-consuming part was actually getting access to the headlight assembly and making sure everything was properly calibrated afterward. And trust me, you want that calibration done right! It's interesting that your mechanic didn't catch this during the service. Sometimes these issues can develop pretty quickly though. In my case, it went from occasional flickering to full-on misalignment in just a few weeks. Since you're planning a long drive, I'd definitely get it checked out specifically for the servomotor. Better safe than sorry, especially for night driving. Quick tip from my experience, if you decide to get it fixed, make sure they check both sides, even if only one is acting up. My mechanic found that when one servomotor goes bad, the other often isn't far behind. I ended up replacing both and I'm glad I did. Let me know if you decide to get it checked out. I'm curious to hear if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for all this info, it's been super helpful! You've basically described my situation to a T, especially with how the bumps affect it. I'll definitely get it checked for the servomotor issue, and that's a really good point about checking both sides. I've got about two weeks before my long drive, so I'll book it in this week to be on the safe side. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what I'm dealing with. Thank goodness these kinds of issues are fixable, even if they're not exactly cheap! Will update you once I get it looked at. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out with this!
