Boxer AC compressor shuts off

Got a 2005 Peugeot Boxer with a gasoline engine. My A/C compressor keeps shutting off. The whole air conditioning system refuses to switch on, and it's not cooling. Hooked it up to diagnostics and found an error stored in memory. Any ideas? It's got 274410 km on the clock.

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Peugeot Boxer with a gasoline engine has an issue where the A/C compressor keeps shutting off, and the air conditioning system won't switch on or cool. Diagnostics revealed an error code, suggesting potential causes like a faulty belt tensioner leading to undervoltage. The solution involved checking and replacing the faulty belt tensioner, which resolved the issue and restored the A/C functionality.

Interesting issue. I have a Peugeot Boxer as well, and I had something similar happen last summer. It felt like the A/C was acting like a light switch – either full blast or nothing. Did you check for anything obvious, like the belt tensioner? A loose belt can cause undervoltage, which messes with the A/C compressor. It’s like a chain reaction; one small thing messes everything else up. How old is your belt?

Good point about the belt tensioner. I'll give that a look-see. When yours had the issue, was it also throwing an error code? And did your A/C just cut out completely, or was it more of a gradual decline in cooling? And where exactly did you find the belt tensioner, so that I can check myself.

Yes, there was an error code present. The A/C cut out completely and suddenly, just like someone flicked a switch. I'd suggest getting a workshop to check it out. It could also be something like a refrigerant leak in the HVAC system, which is harder to diagnose yourself without the right equipment.

Thanks for the insight! I checked the belt, and you were spot on; the tensioner was shot. Took it to the workshop, and they confirmed undervoltage caused by the faulty tensioner. Repair, including a new tensioner and A/C check, came to around 240€. Appreciate the help!
