C3 oil pressure warning and engine noise

Hi, I've got a 2002 Citroen C3, gasoline engine, with 228390 km on the clock. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp has been lighting up, and there's a noticeable loud mechanical noise coming from the engine. I've checked the oil level, and it's fine. Could this be related to the oil pump? I fear the worst, like engine bearings going bad.

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Citroen C3 owner reported an oil pressure warning light and loud mechanical noise from the engine, despite the oil level being fine. The issue was suspected to be related to the oil pump or potentially failing engine bearings. Another individual with a similar experience suggested that the problem could be due to oil pump failure, which can lead to low oil pressure and engine damage. The owner took the car to a workshop, where a defective oil pump was confirmed and replaced, resolving the issue before any significant engine damage occurred.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, I had a similar issue with my C3. The oil pressure warning and loud noises are concerning. Have you recently done an oil change? Sometimes using the wrong oil viscosity can cause problems. The oil pressure gauge, if you have one, would also give a clue. In my case, it ended up being oil pump failure, which then starved the engine of oil.

Thanks for the reply. Oil change was about 8000 km ago, using 10W-40 oil, which I thought was correct. You mentioned oil pump failure. Were the symptoms similar? How did you confirm it, and what was the extent of the damage?

Yes, very similar symptoms. The oil pressure light flickered at first, then stayed on, accompanied by engine noise. I didn't confirm it myself; I took it to a workshop. They diagnosed it as a defective oil pump. Prolonged driving with low oil pressure can damage engine bearings, leading to a costly engine rebuild. I'd advise getting it checked professionally ASAP.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Took your advice and brought it to a workshop. They confirmed it was indeed a defect in the oil pump, just as we suspected. Total repair cost came to 755€. At least I caught it before any major engine damage. Changing the oil pump did the trick.
