C30 Crankshaft Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Volvo C30 exhibited issues such as a check engine light, reduced engine power, poor response, and increased fuel consumption. The error code indicated a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' issue, suggesting a potential crankshaft sensor fault. After checking the wiring and considering a timing chain issue, it was determined that the crankshaft sensor was the likely cause. A local shop confirmed the diagnosis, and replacing the sensor resolved the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I did check the wiring, but nothing obvious stood out. The timing chain crossed my mind too, but wouldn't I hear some rattling if it was stretched? Is there a way to be more sure about the crankshaft sensor before replacing it?

While a stretched timing chain may exhibit rattling, its absence does not preclude its involvement. Given the diagnostic code and symptoms, coupled with your visual inspection of the sensor wiring, the crankshaft sensor is the most probable cause. To mitigate uncertainties, consulting a qualified technician for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment is advisable, prior to undertaking any repairs. They possess the requisite tools to assess sensor functionality.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a local shop, and they confirmed it was indeed the crankshaft sensor. The total repair, including parts and labor, came to 340€. Runs like new now!

A 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' fault can indeed stem from a faulty crankshaft position sensor. To ascertain this definitively, have you inspected the sensor's wiring and connections for any signs of damage or corrosion? Moreover, it is pertinent to consider the possibility of a timing chain issue, although the crankshaft sensor remains a highly probable culprit given the symptoms.
