Citroen C5 model year 2009: Problems with engine light, loss of power and possible camshaft phasing problems

Jerking on acceleration

Metal shavings in oil

Unsteady engine

Valve adjustment noise

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Weird engine noise

Hi guys, I currently have a problem with my 2009 Citroen C5. It is showing strange symptoms such as engine light on, loss of power, rough engine running, jerking on acceleration, poor fuel economy, valve adjustment noises, strange engine noises and metal shavings in the oil. I have the impression that it could have something to do with the camshaft phasing. Have any of you had similar experiences and got this problem fixed? Would like to know what was done in the workshop and what it achieved. Many thanks in advance for your help and tips!

Hello, I have had similar experiences with my 2007 Citroen C4. The way you described it is pretty much exactly the symptoms I had. To be honest, I would describe my knowledge of cars as low-level, but I was very happy with my garage. The mechanics there also suspected a problem with the valve mechanism and it turned out they were right. They replaced the valve mechanism because it was broken in and defective, and that solved the problem. The whole thing cost me 405 euros. Without info on mileage, regular servicing and any accidents your car has had, I can't add much more, but I hope this helps you. Maybe it's the same for you. Let me know when you have more information. Greetings!

Hello, thanks for your reply! My C5 now has 187542 kilometers and the last inspection was just under a year ago. I have also kept to all the necessary service intervals up to that point. I haven't had an accident with the car yet. Perhaps I should also inform my garage about possible valve damage. The costs look feasible at first. I'll keep you up to date! Greetings back!

Hey, thanks for the additional information. If the mileage, service and whether the car has been in an accident are good general conditions and your car has been relatively well treated, then it could indeed be the valve mechanism. I think it's definitely worth trying to point this out to your garage. In my case at least, they diagnosed it quickly and were able to fix it quickly. Since you've had regular services, the rest of the engine should be in pretty good shape. Since my car also had metal shavings in the oil, I would strongly recommend checking or even replacing the valve mechanism. Once the metal is in the oil circuit, it can very quickly damage other parts as well. 405 euros is definitely less than having to replace the whole engine in batches because the metal has scratched everything. I hope this helps and keep my fingers crossed that it's just that and nothing worse. Keep us up to date! Greetings!

Hi, that's really helpful, thanks! Your point about the metal in the oil circuit makes sense. I realize now that I should have that checked immediately. It's good to know that this repair may be all that's needed, and that the rest of the engine is probably fine. I'm going to call my garage right now and hopefully they can take a look at my car ASAP. I'll definitely keep you posted. Regards and thanks again for your help!
