Cobalt Hissing and Fuel Consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Chevy Cobalt owner experienced increased fuel consumption, a check engine light, and a hissing sound during acceleration, suspecting an air intake leak. Another person suggested checking vacuum hoses, particularly the intake hose, as a similar issue was resolved by fixing a split hose near the engine block. The owner confirmed the problem was a split intake hose, which was professionally repaired, resolving the issues.

Good shout on the intake hose! Where exactly was the leak on yours? I've had a quick look around, but can't pinpoint it. It definitely gets louder when I put my foot down, and the car feels sluggish. Could a dodgy air filter cause this too?

For me the intake hose had a split on the underside, near the engine block, that was hard to spot. Get it checked out professionally. A split hose will impact fuel economy, cause that hissing and trigger a check engine light. I went to my local mechanic and they sorted it in an hour.

Thanks a lot! Took your advice and got it checked at a workshop. You nailed it – a split intake hose! Cost me about 100€ to get it replaced, but the hissing is gone, the check engine light is off, and my fuel economy is back to normal. Legend!

Sounds familiar. I had something similar happen on my Cobalt. Check all your vacuum hoses, especially the intake hose. Is the hissing definitely related to acceleration? Does it change with engine load?
