Engine problems in a 2018 Skoda Octavia: EGR valve defective?

Hello everyone, I have a small problem with my 2018 petrol Skoda Octavia (mileage: 90127 km). It has recently started showing some symptoms: The check engine light comes on, the engine shuts off by itself, it loses power, runs rough, it shakes a bit when idling and the exhaust smell is really heavy. I myself suspect that the EGR valve is malfunctioning. Have any of you had similar problems? What are your experiences with the mechanic? Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience at my last garage visit and am considering whether I should look for a new one. Looking forward to your answers and tips. Thanks a lot!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Skoda Octavia is experiencing engine issues, including the check engine light, engine shutdowns, power loss, rough idling, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a malfunctioning EGR valve. A similar case with a 2015 Skoda Superb was resolved by replacing the EGR valve, which restored the car's performance. Seeking a reliable mechanic for diagnosis and potential EGR valve replacement is recommended to address the problem.

Hey, you're probably right with your suspicion about the EGR valve. I had a similar problem with my 2015 petrol Skoda Superb. I had a very similar fault - the light was constantly on, the engine was running rough and the exhaust smell was unbelievable. After a few tests, my mechanic found the EGR valve to be faulty and replaced it. Yes, it is a serious problem and can cause more problems if not fixed. However, in my case a simple replacement was enough. It took some time, but the problem was solved and my Superb is now running like new again. Whether you look for a new mechanic or not depends on how satisfied you are with their work. In my case, I was happy with the work that was done on my Superb. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your feedback! It looks like I hit the mark with my suspicions about the EGR valve. Can you perhaps remember how much you paid for the repair back then? And have you had any other problems with your Skoda Superb since then? Best regards!

Hello, yes, you guessed right about the EGR valve problem. I paid €355 for the repair at the time. It wasn't exactly cheap, but since the repair my Skoda Superb has been running like clockwork again. No jerking, no smelly exhaust, nothing. Just a loud, powerful engine. So I can say that since I've been to the mechanic and had the EGR valve replaced, I've had no further problems with my car. I hope this helps you. Greetings!

Hi, thanks for the information! That really helps me. Of course, €355 is a good amount, but if the car runs perfectly again afterwards, then it's probably worth it. I'll pay a visit to my old mechanic and see what options he can offer me. Thanks again for your advice and experience! Regards!
