Epica heavy steering vibration

Hi, I have a 2007 Chevrolet Epica with a gasoline engine. Recently, the steering has become noticeably heavier, like the power steering is failing. Also, I'm getting a vibrating steering wheel at certain speeds. My local mechanic suspects it's a defective steering angle sensor, possibly due to faulty coding. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Chevrolet Epica is experiencing heavy steering and steering wheel vibration, suggesting a potential power steering failure. A mechanic suspects a defective steering angle sensor, possibly due to faulty coding, as the cause. Another person with a similar issue suggests checking wheel alignment and replacing the sensor if necessary, emphasizing professional handling due to safety concerns. The decision is made to replace the sensor at a workshop to resolve the problem.

Interesting. I had something like that happen on my Epica (it's a real pain, isn't it?). The vibrating was awful. For me, the traction control light was also going nuts! If the steering angle sensor isn't reading right, it can mess with all sorts of systems that rely on knowing which way you're pointing. Did your mechanic check the wheel alignment too? Sometimes that can throw things off and affect the sensor readings.

Thanks for the reply! The traction control light hasn't come on, just the steering and vibration issues. You mentioned sensor readings. Did you replace the sensor or was it a coding issue for you? Trying to figure out if it's worth a shot recalibrating it first before replacing it. And no, he did not check the wheel alignment, but that is a good call.

Unfortunately, I had to replace the sensor itself. It could be a coding issue, but I wouldn't mess with the steering system myself - I am not qualified enough. The steering angle sensor communicates with a lot of systems. If it is off, it affects your safety and could lead to an accident. It is better to have it checked in a professional workshop, that can guarantee the proper function.

Okay, thanks for the insight. I'll take it to a workshop and have the sensor replaced. The repair including the new sensor cost 195€. Hopefully, that resolves the problem.
