A defective glow control unit, huh? How would I check the cable and plug connections? I'm not super technical, so eli5 if you can. And I didn't run a test, I don't have the equipment for that kind of stuff.

Okay, if you're not comfortable fiddling with electrical stuff, I'd highly recommend taking it to a workshop for a diagnostic test. It does sound like the defective glow control unit. The fact that the preheating lamp doesn't switch off is a dead giveaway.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on! It was indeed the cable connection to the glow control unit. They fixed the connection for 95€. No more smoke now!

Sounds like a defective glow control unit, especially with those symptoms. Have you checked the cable and plug connections? A bad connection there can cause all sorts of weird electrical issues. Did you run a diagnostic test to check for error codes?
