Equinox Exhaust Flap Malfunction
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Chevrolet Equinox is experiencing issues with malfunctioning exhaust flaps, leading to louder exhaust noise and a noisy engine after cold starts. The problem is suspected to be a defective exhaust flap. A similar issue on a different vehicle was resolved by replacing the faulty component. The suggested solution is to have a professional diagnose and potentially replace the defective exhaust flaps, which successfully resolved the issue in this case.

Engine performance seems normal, but the noise is definitely noticeable, especially on startup. You mentioned exhaust blockage on your Volvo – was it a complete flap failure, or something else? Did you replace the entire exhaust component or just the flaps?

Complete flap failure eventually, after the increased noise. I tried some DIY fixes but in the end it needed a new part. Given the error code, you might need a professional to check the exhaust components. It could be more than just a blockage.

Thanks for the insight. I took it to a workshop, and the diagnosis confirmed defective exhaust flaps. The repair cost was 190€. Replaced and all is well.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my old Volvo V70. Check for exhaust blockage; that can sometimes mess with the flap operation. Is your engine performance also affected?
