Erratic engine running and loud hissing in a Citroen C8 diesel from 2006: experience with swirl flap control on the intake manifold

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Hello all you car professionals out there. I have a problem with my old girl - a 2006 Citroen C8 diesel with 87783km on the clock. The check engine light is on, she doesn't really pull through, the engine runs rough, it shakes when idling and there is also a loud hiss when accelerating. The last time I tried to sort this out with a mechanic, I had a nasty experience. I suspect that the swirl flap control on the intake manifold could be the culprit. Has anyone here had similar experiences? What were your steps back then? How did it go with your mechanic? I look forward to tips and experience reports. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2009 Citroen C5. Let me tell you what I did. There were also the symptoms you described, such as hissing when accelerating and shaky engine running. In the end, it turned out that the swirl flap was broken. After some research and a visit to the garage, the mechanic replaced the swirl flap and made the necessary adjustments to the intake manifold. It wasn't an easy job, but it was definitely doable. So it's quite possible that your C8 has the same problem. Be sure to have it checked, because if the swirl flap fails completely, it can cause serious problems. In any case, start the repair as soon as possible. Hope this helps you a little!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply and support. Your experience sounds pretty similar to mine, and it sounds like I really should see a mechanic. Could you remember how much you paid for the repair at the time? And were there any other problems with the swirl flap or intake manifold after that? Any more information would be really helpful. Thanks a lot!

Of course, I can still remember that. We also had the fault with the swirl flap control on the intake manifold rectified by the mechanic. The swirl flap was broken on my C5 at the time and had to be replaced. The whole thing cost me €865 - yes, unfortunately that was a pretty hefty price. But I decided it was worth it, because I wanted to avoid further damage and keep my old girl going for a bit longer. And so far I haven't had any further problems with the swirl flap or the intake manifold - everything runs like clockwork. So, I would recommend you visit the mechanic and get the problem with the swirl flap fixed. Sure, it might cost a bit, but it's definitely worth it. Hope this helps you!

Hi. Wow, that's definitely a lot of money, but I think you're absolutely right. I want to keep my old girl for a while longer and it's definitely better to avoid potential damage. Your experience is very reassuring and I feel more confident to visit the mechanic now. I really thank you for your kind advice and information - it was very helpful. I'm going straight to the mechanic tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!
