Express diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Chevrolet Express diesel was experiencing a "check engine" light, power loss, excessive smoke, and a strong diesel smell. The diagnostic scan indicated that the diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure was too low. A suggestion was made to check the exhaust back pressure sensor, which was found to be defective. After replacing the sensor, the vehicle's performance issues were resolved, with no more smoke or smell and restored power.

The exhaust back pressure sensor, huh? I hadn't really focused on that. Where exactly is that located on the Express, and is it a pain to get to?

On the Insignia, it was near the DPF, but I'm not sure on the Express. Access was tight, but doable. If it's faulty, it could definitely cause those symptoms. Personally, I took it to a shop, they diagnosed it quickly.

Thanks for the tip! I replaced the sensor. Indeed it was defective. Cost me 245€. The Express runs smoothly now, no more smoke or smell. The power is back, too!

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues on my 2018 Opel Insignia. Warning lights, power loss, the works. Though mine was a gasoline engine. Did you check the exhaust back pressure sensor? Seems like that could be the problem.
