Function of the diesel particulate filter
Diesel particulate filters filter over 90% of harmful soot and fine particles from exhaust gases. Typically, closed wall flow filters made of ceramic or metal are installed to filter the exhaust gases. Due to their molecular attraction (adhesion), the soot particles are held to the filter walls and collect there.
As the particles accumulate, the filter must be regularly cleaned by combustion, which requires an exhaust gas temperature of over 550 degrees Celsius. This regeneration produces mainly CO2 and water vapor, with a small residue remaining in the filter as ash. Overloading the filter can impair its function.
