Function of throttle valve
The throttle valve regulates the air-fuel mixture in the engine. In gasoline engines, it influences engine speed and power. In modern diesel engines, it enables precise exhaust gas recirculation and prevents engine chatter when the engine is switched off. In modern vehicles, there is no direct connection to the throttle valve.
A sensor on the accelerator pedal sends signals to the engine control unit, which in turn controls the throttle position. This position is constantly compared with other engine data to calculate the optimum position. A throttle potentiometer determines how far the throttle is open and sends this info to the ECU.
