Frontier diesel excessive fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Nissan Frontier diesel is experiencing excessive fuel consumption, stalling, a check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. These issues are likely caused by a faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, which disrupts the air-fuel ratio. A diagnostic scan can confirm the MAF sensor's failure, often due to contamination or aging. Replacing the MAF sensor resolved the problem, restoring the vehicle's performance.

MAF meter, huh? Is there any way to confirm that before I start replacing parts? And what would cause it to fail in the first place?

Given the symptoms, it's highly probable. A diagnostic scan will confirm the MAF sensor reading. Failure can stem from contamination or aging, affecting its ability to accurately measure airflow. Without proper airflow data, the engine management system struggles to maintain the correct air-fuel ratio, leading to all the issues you're experiencing. You may need to visit a workshop.

Thanks for the confirmation. Took it to the shop, and you nailed it – MAF sensor was indeed the culprit. Cost me 365€ to get it replaced. Runs like new now.

Sounds like a defective mass air flow (MAF) meter. The symptoms you describe – increased fuel consumption, stalling, check engine light, and smoke – are all consistent with a faulty MAF sensor disrupting the air-fuel ratio.
