Golf Hybrid's Electric Steering Column Adjustment Dead

Hi there, my Golf Hybrid has developed a steering column adjustment issue. The electric adjustment stopped working completely and theres an error message stored in the system. The car is fairly new (2022 model) with about 71000km on it. Had some subpar work done at my last mechanic visit, so Im hesitant to return there. Has anyone experienced a similar steering failure with the electric column adjustment? Looking for advice on typical repair costs and trusted repair solutions before taking it to a shop.

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers on a 2022 Golf Hybrid experiencing a failure in the electric steering column adjustment, with an error message stored in the system. The issue is identified as a faulty wiring connection in the steering column assembly, similar to a problem encountered by another user with a VW Passat eHybrid. The suggested solution involves a diagnostic scan, replacement of corroded connectors, and recalibration of the system by qualified technicians. The repair, though costly, ensures the steering adjustment functions correctly, highlighting the importance of professional handling for complex electric systems.

Similar issue occurred with my VW Passat eHybrid 2019. The electric steering adjustment failed completely, displaying a system error. The mechanical fault was traced to damaged wiring connections near the steering column assembly. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan of the steering control module, Removal of steering column trim, Replacement of the main wiring harness due to worn cable insulation, Recalibration of electric adjustment system This was a serious issue requiring specialized equipment for proper diagnosis and repair. The electric steering components are integrated with multiple safety systems, so proper repair by qualified technicians is essential. The root cause was moisture damage affecting the electrical connections, leading to corrosion at the main plug connector. Regular maintenance checks of the steering column wiring could have prevented this issue. Worth noting that if the steering wheel is stuck in an uncomfortable position, the car should not be driven until repaired, as it poses a safety risk. Would recommend having this checked at an authorized dealer given the complexity of electric adjustment systems in newer models.

Thanks for sharing that detailed repair experience with the Passat. Really sounds similar to my situation with the electronic steering adjustment failing. Currently waiting on parts for my Golf, but I am curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the complete repair? Also wondering if youve had any recurring electric steering issues since getting it fixed?

After getting my Passat properly repaired, I can confirm the electronic steering column adjustment works perfectly now. The total repair cost was just 95€ since the mechanical fault turned out to be a simple cable connection issue near the steering column, much less complex than initially feared. No recurring problems with the electric steering system since the fix. The issue stemmed from a loose plug connection that the technician was able to identify quickly with diagnostic equipment. The electronic adjustment functions smoothly now, much like when the car was new. This repair experience was far better than expected, especially considering my initial concern about potential major steering failure. While electric steering systems can be complex, sometimes the fix is straightforward when handled by qualified technicians who know where to look.

Thanks for all the feedback. Finally got my Golf fixed yesterday and wanted to share my experience. The electronic steering issue turned out to be similar to what others mentioned, a faulty wiring connection in the steering column assembly. Found a certified shop specializing in electronic steering systems. The diagnostic scan revealed corroded connectors affecting the electric adjustment mechanism. Total repair came to 780€ including parts and labor. More expensive than expected but they did a thorough job replacing the damaged wiring harness and recalibrating the whole system. The steering adjustment now works perfectly again. While the repair cost was significant, at least I know its been properly fixed by qualified techs this time. Much better than the subpar work from my previous mechanic that likely contributed to the mechanical fault in the first place.
