HHR engine stalls after fuel filter change
Summary of the thread
After changing the fuel filter on a 2008 Chevy HHR, the engine began stalling at idle, and the check engine light turned on, indicating reduced engine power. This issue was likely related to a defective fuel pressure regulator, which can cause engine misfires and stalling. It was suggested to check the fuel rail pressure and use an OBD2 scanner for error codes. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing the faulty fuel pressure regulator, restoring normal engine function.

I haven't checked the fuel rail pressure specifically. Where exactly is the fuel pressure regulator located on this engine? Also, is it possible to test it somehow before replacing it?

The fuel pressure regulator is usually attached to the fuel rail. On your HHR, it's likely integrated, which means you'd replace the whole rail. Testing it can be tricky without specialized tools. Given that the issue arose right after the fuel filter change and you're experiencing those symptoms, it really points to a fuel pressure problem. I strongly suggest taking it to a workshop to get it diagnosed properly before throwing parts at it.

Thanks for the advice. Took it to a local shop, and you were right, fuel pressure regulator was busted. 45€ later, it runs fine now. Lesson learned: be extra careful when messing with the fuel system!

Sounds like a fuel issue. The fuel pressure regulator might be defective. Did you check the fuel rail pressure? Sometimes an error entry after a fuel filter change can trigger the pressure sensor. A bad regulator can cause engine misfires and stalling, especially at idle. Have you checked for any codes with an OBD2 scanner?
