Kangoo overheating speed sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Renault Kangoo with a petrol engine is experiencing overheating and a check engine light issue. The initial suspicion is a faulty radiator fan, potentially due to a defective speed sensor preventing the fan from activating. Another suggestion is to check the thermal switch, which could also cause the fan not to engage. Ultimately, the problem was diagnosed as a faulty speed sensor, which was replaced, resolving the overheating issue.

Interesting. I haven't looked at the thermal switch yet. Whereabouts is it located? And is there any way to test it without just replacing it? I'm trying to avoid throwing parts at it blindly.

It's usually near the thermostat housing, on the engine block. Honestly, testing it properly can be a pain without the right tools. Given the symptoms and your mileage, I'd almost bet on it being faulty. But to be sure, might be worth a quick visit to a workshop just to get a proper diagnosis. I ended up going that route – saved me time and hassle in the long run.

I appreciate the insight. I'll check the thermal switch location, but you're right, probably best to get it diagnosed professionally. It was indeed the speed sensor, cost me 250€ at the workshop, but at least the Kangoo is running cool again now. Thanks!

Sounds familiar! I had something similar with my Kangoo. Engine temp went sky high and the light came on. Did you check the thermal switch? Sometimes that's the culprit – it's like the thermostat in your house, but for your engine cooling. If that's gone bad, your fan won't get the signal to start spinning.
