Lexus SC Belt Tensioner Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Lexus SC owner suspects a faulty belt tensioner as the cause of a malfunctioning belt handover. Another owner experienced a similar issue, where the belt handover failed due to a defective tensioner pulley. Replacing the tensioner resolved the problem, and it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a workshop to confirm and address the issue.

Thanks, I'll check those pulleys. When you say 'similar,' do you mean the belt handover also wasn't working properly for you? Was it the tensioner that solved it?

Yes, the belt handover was completely shot. It was the tensioner pulley, like you suspected. After replacing it, the handover worked smoothly again. Given the mileage, I'd advise getting it checked by a workshop. My repair was around 455€ all in.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate you confirming it was the tensioner. I'll take it to a workshop and get it sorted.

I had something similar happen on my Lexus SC. I noticed it when the belt started squealing, especially when the engine was cold. Check your tensioner pulley and idler pulley for play or noise. Could be the same issue.
