Looking for Advice on 2018 Nissan Elgrand Diesel Emitting Black Smoke with Engine Issues

Hey folks, I've got a bit of a puzzle with my 2018 Nissan Elgrand Diesel. It's been giving off black smoke when I step on the gas, the check engine light is on, lost some power, and the engine is not steady. It also jerks and hisses loudly during acceleration, stalls and shakes while idling, and there's this whistling noise. I'm suspecting it might be a problem with the boost pressure actuator. Has anyone experienced a similar issue with their Elgrand or any diesel car? If so, how did you guys sort it out at the workshop? Any pointers or personal experiences would be massively appreciated. Cheers!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Nissan Elgrand Diesel is experiencing issues such as emitting black smoke, a check engine light, power loss, engine instability, jerking, hissing, stalling, shaking, and a whistling noise. The suspected cause is a problem with the boost pressure actuator or its wiring harness. A similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by addressing a damaged wiring harness to the boost pressure actuator. It is suggested to inspect the wiring harness and use a scanner to diagnose the check engine light for a clearer understanding of the problem.

Howdy! Coincidentally, I had a similar trouble with my 2016 Nissan Juke a while back. Got to say, when it comes to car mechanics, I'm smack in the middle of low and some experience. What I did was haul my Juke to my trusty workshop. Turns out, the culprit was a damaged wiring harness to the boost pressure actuator. Just like your Elgrand, mine had hissing, jerking, and the same whistling noise. Fixing it cost me a cool 155 Euro, but it definitely settled the issue. Obvious question here - have you had a proper look at your wiring harness to the boost pressure actuator? That might be your issue, based on what happened with my Juke. If you need more specific advice, may I ask what model of Elgrand you've got and any other symptoms you've noticed? Might be able to tell you more then. Hope this helps. Hang in there! Cheers!

Hey, thanks for sharing - much appreciated! You know, I haven't checked the wiring harness. Was too focused on the actuator itself and getting my hands dirty there. It's indeed a smart suggestion, given your experience on your Juke. My Elgrand is 2018, white Imperial Umber version. Besides the issues I already mentioned, the car even pulled to one side while driving, and strangely had ironically high fuel consumption for a diesel engine. And yeah, last serviced it at about 70,000 kilometres- the current mileage is 72186 KM. Will definitely take your advice and look into the wiring harness issue. A euro saved is a euro earned, right? Will update you after taking this gremlin to the workshop. Thanks again! Eagerly awaiting any more wisdom you're willing to share, Cheers!

Hello! You're welcome! Cars, they can be a real headache at times, right? I have to say, the additional symptoms you shared sound all too familiar. During my Juke's trouble times, it had a high fuel consumption issue too, which just added salt to the wound. And the pulling to one side? Yep, been there as well. Now, I'm no mechanic, but these symptoms, combined with the ones you initially mentioned, might indeed suggest problems with the boost pressure actuator or its wiring harness. Definitely worth looking into both. And yep, a Euro saved is indeed a Euro earned! Nobody wants to blow money on unnecessary repairs. Keep us posted on how it goes! I'm crossing my fingers that it's a quick and straightforward fix for you. And remember, you're never alone in this car trouble journey. Cheers, and good luck with the 'gremlin'! P.S. make sure they plug in the scanner when checking the engine light. The code will give you a pretty good idea of what's causing it!

Spot on! No truer words have been spoken. Who knew cars could be such drama queens, eh? Good to hear you had similar symptoms and managed to solve it - makes me hopeful. Honestly, the engine light thing had me in shivers, but you're right, that scanner should shed some light on the mystery. I'm planning to take the "drama queen" to my go-to workshop this weekend. Let's hope it's as simple as the wiring harness or the actuator like you mentioned. I absolutely agree, unnecessary repairs are a big no-no, not good on the pocket at all! Your tips and shared experience has truly been a lifesaver. Fingers crossed the gremlin gets sorted out soon. You've got me feeling pretty optimistic - thanks for that! Will keep you posted once we're done playing detective with my Elgrand. Till then, wish me luck! Cheers and stay awesome!
