Malibu Hybrid rough start and stalling

I'm having a serious issue with my 2012 Chevy Malibu Hybrid. It's got around 189k kilometers on it. Lately, it's been starting really rough, my fuel consumption has gone way up, and the engine feels like it's lost power. Plus, it idles unevenly, and sometimes it even stalls when I'm stopped. A mechanic suggested it might be a defective injection nozzle, likely from being dirty. Anyone else experienced anything like this? The estimated repair cost is around 515€ which is a big hit.

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Chevy Malibu Hybrid was experiencing rough starts, increased fuel consumption, power loss, uneven idling, and occasional stalling. The mechanic suggested that a defective or dirty injection nozzle might be the cause. After further examination and replacement of the faulty injection nozzle, the vehicle's performance improved, resolving the issues.

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar problem with my old Renault Megane, though it was a petrol engine, not a hybrid. Rough starts, poor fuel economy, and the occasional stall – the whole shebang. Have you noticed any check engine light or any specific codes when it happens? It could be clogging of the injection valve.

Thanks! Yeah, the check engine light did come on a while back. I had it scanned and it showed something related to emissions and misfires, which the mechanic linked to the fuel injectors. But you said 'clogging of the injection valve' - is there anything specific I should ask the mechanic to check regarding that?

Definitely ask them to take a closer look at the injection valves themselves. Maybe they can try cleaning them first – that sometimes solves the issue if it's just build-up. But honestly, from what you're describing, it sounds like you’re on the right track with the diagnosis. My mechanic ended up saying the same thing for my Renault - sometimes they just fail with time. Best to let them examine it and tell you whether a cleaning will do or if a replacement is necessary.

Thanks a bunch! I took it back to the workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed a defective injection nozzle and replaced it. All in all, with labor, it came up to 515€. Now it is running smoothly. Appreciate the help!
