Multiple BMW M4 Warning Lights & Heavy Steering Issue

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

|

Power steering without function

Hi all! My 2021 BMW M4 (35k km) is acting up and I need some advice. The dashboard looks like a Christmas tree with multiple warning lights (ESP, ABS, brake, etc.) coming on at once. The steering has become really heavy, and there's a noticeable shake in the wheel. I suspect it might be the steering angle sensor, but my last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone experienced similar issues? How much did the repair cost you, and would you recommend any specific diagnostic approach? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there! I faced almost identical issues with my 2018 BMW M3 last year. Same warning lights lit up like crazy, ESP, ABS, brake warnings, the whole deal. The heavy steering and vibration were exactly what I experienced too. Got it checked at the garage, and you're right on target, it was the steering angle sensor. The mechanic had to recalibrate and code the new sensor after installation. It wasn't a hugely complex job, but it needed specialized diagnostic equipment to properly code the sensor to the car's systems. While not the most serious repair I've had done, it's definitely not something to ignore since it affects crucial safety systems. My car was sorted in about half a day. Just make sure whoever works on it has proper BMW diagnostic tools and coding capabilities, that's essential for these newer models. Good luck with the fix.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's super helpful and sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Do you mind if I ask how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Really appreciate the advice about finding a shop with proper diagnostic tools, definitely gonna keep that in mind.

Hey again! Happy to update you! Just got my car back from the mechanic last week, it was indeed the steering angle sensor causing all those headaches. The total bill came to 195 € for the coding fix, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Since getting it sorted, my M3's been running like a dream, no more warning lights, steering's back to being smooth as silk, and that annoying vibration is completely gone. All those Christmas tree lights on the dash are history! It's such a relief having everything back to normal. You know what's funny? I was initially worried it might be something way more serious (and expensive!), but sometimes these high-tech cars just need their computers to be told what's what. The diagnostic equipment they used was spot on, definitely worth finding someone who knows their way around BMW's systems. Let me know how yours turns out! Always happy to compare notes with fellow BMW owners.

Thanks for the follow-up! Just got back from the mechanic today, and you were totally right. Had the same issue fixed, though my bill was a bit higher at 245 €, guess prices vary between shops. The whole thing took about 4 hours, but what a difference! My M4 feels like a completely different car now. The steering's back to being buttery smooth, and my dashboard is finally back to normal, no more light show! The mechanic I found was actually great, really knew his stuff with BMWs and had all the right diagnostic tools. Definitely keeping him for future repairs. Funny how something relatively simple can cause so many warning lights to go crazy. I was honestly expecting much worse when I first saw all those warnings. Really glad I asked here and got your advice, saved me a lot of worry and probably some cash too. Thanks again for all your help!
