Nissan Kix rough running exhaust smell
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Nissan Kix with a gasoline engine exhibited rough running, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell, leading to a check engine light activation. The initial suspicion was a particulate filter or catalytic converter issue. However, the sulfur-like smell indicated a likely malfunction of the lambda sensor, which can cause the engine to run rich. The problem was confirmed and resolved at a workshop by replacing the faulty lambda sensor.

Sulfur-like smell, yeah, that nails it! The lambda sensor, eh? Is that a big job to fix, or is it something a somewhat-competent DIYer could tackle?

If it's the lambda sensor, which the sulfur smell strongly suggests, it can cause all those symptoms. While replacing it isn't rocket science, you might need special tools to remove the old one. Plus, diagnosing it definitively requires some testing equipment. Probably best to get it checked at a workshop.

Thanks for the advice! You were spot on. Took it to the workshop and it was indeed the lambda sensor. Cost me 375€ to get it sorted, but at least it's running smoothly again now.

Rough running and strong exhaust smell with the engine light on? Sounds like an exhaust treatment malfunction, alright. Is the smell kind of sulfur-like? Could be a lambda sensor that's gone bad causing the engine to run rich.
