Nissan Note engine stalling at idle

I have a 2009 Nissan Note with a gasoline engine and 104197 km mileage. The check engine light comes on, and the engine occasionally stalls at idle. Suspect a fuel tank ventilation system leak, possibly a defective activated charcoal filter. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Nissan Note is experiencing engine stalling at idle, accompanied by a check engine light. The suspected cause is a leak in the fuel tank ventilation system, possibly due to a defective activated charcoal filter. A similar issue was resolved by diagnosing the system with smoke testing, which identified the charcoal canister as the problem. The recommended solution is to have a professional workshop handle the diagnostics and repair to avoid potential hazards.

Whoa, that sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same thing happen with my Note. Check engine light and stalling issues drove me nuts! Is the purge valve clicking like crazy, or is it completely dead? It could also be a vacuum leak somewhere in the system, hard to tell sometimes. Keep us posted!

Purge valve seems to be functioning, though I haven't tested it extensively. Where exactly did you find the leak in your system?

I never actually found the exact leak point, to be honest. But I took it to a workshop, and they smoked the system and determined that it was indeed the charcoal canister. The guy told me that these cars are particularly sensitive to system failures in air flow and that it's best to let them handle it because a badly done job could be expensive, and a fire hazard.

Thanks for the insight. I'll take it to a trusted workshop for diagnostics and repair. They also suspect the charcoal canister and quoted 275€ including diagnostics and replacement. Seems reasonable.

Good afternoon, I have a 2010 Nissan Note. 1.6 E11 petrol. Something similar happens to me. In the summers, when it's hot, the car stalls at idle with the air conditioning on. Without the air conditioning on, it doesn't stall. It doesn't indicate any engine fault. Then I can't start the car until it cools down and the fan stops.

Start by checking the condition of your battery and alternator, as they might struggle to provide enough power when the air conditioning is on. Also, inspect the idle air control valve, which could be failing to adjust the idle speed properly under load. If these checks don't resolve the issue, consider having a professional diagnose the problem, as it could be related to the engine's cooling system or other components. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!

Thank you for your suggestion. We have removed the thermostat and the problem continues. We have also replaced the temperature sensor and it has not worked either. It only happens when the outside temperature is very high, above 30 degrees. I don't think it's the idle valve since the problem would reproduce regardless of the outside temperature. Thank you anyway.

Consider checking the condition of the cooling fan and its relay. If the fan isn't operating efficiently, it might not be providing adequate cooling when the engine is under additional load from the air conditioning, especially in high temperatures. Ensure the fan is engaging properly and that there are no obstructions. If the issue persists, it might be best to consult a professional to further investigate the cooling system. Let me know if you have any questions or updates!
