Yeah, I wiggled the wires a bit, but didn't see anything obvious. Is there a good way to really check the connection without just poking around?

While visual inspection and gentle manipulation of the wiring can sometimes reveal obvious issues, a more thorough examination often requires specialized tools and expertise. Given the symptoms you're experiencing and the potential impact of a malfunctioning knock sensor on ignition timing and engine performance, it would be prudent to consult with a qualified mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out it was just a bad connection. Cost me 95€ to fix. What a rip!

A defective knock sensor could indeed be the root cause of the issues you're experiencing. The symptoms you've described align with what one might expect when a knock sensor isn't functioning correctly. Have you had the chance to check the wiring and connector to the sensor itself? A loose or corroded connection can often trigger these symptoms.
