Onix check engine light and exhaust leak

I'm having a major headache with my 2023 Chevrolet Onix (gasoline engine). The check engine light keeps popping on. It's driving really rough, almost like it's gasping for air. I've also noticed a really strong exhaust smell and it looks like there's some exhaust actually leaking near the back. My car has 246784 km. Could this be the lambda sensor? Any ideas before I lose my mind?

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Chevrolet Onix is experiencing a persistent check engine light, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, indicating a potential exhaust leak. The issues could be caused by a faulty lambda (oxygen) sensor, which affects the fuel mixture, or a stuck EGR valve. An exhaust leak can also disrupt sensor readings. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired at a shop, which ultimately confirmed and resolved the problem by replacing the defective lambda sensor and fixing the exhaust leak.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I had something similar happen with my Onix. Is it misfiring at all? Could be a faulty oxygen sensor messing with the fuel mixture. Or perhaps even the EGR valve is stuck open. An exhaust leak wouldn't help either as that can throw off the readings. Think of it like trying to bake a cake with a hole in your oven – the temperature is all wrong!

No misfiring that I can feel. So, if it's the oxygen sensor, would that cause all the problems that I'm seeing? Could a leak actually trigger all this? I was thinking maybe the particulate filter?

That's great news, if there's no misfire the engine is probably ok. It definitely sounds like it. The oxygen sensor is pretty sensitive and controls a lot. And yes, a leak before the sensor can cause really funky readings. Honestly, without hooking it up to a computer, you are just guessing. If you don't have the tools to read it yourself, you are better off putting it in a shop.

Thanks so much for the advice. I took it to the shop, and you were right. Turns out the lambda sensor was defective. Replaced it and fixed the exhaust leak - cost me 375€. Running like new again!
