Transfer fluid... is that different from gear oil? And where exactly is the transfer case on this thing? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the drivetrain. Is there an easy way to check for leaks without, you know, taking everything apart?

Yeah, transfer fluid is basically a type of gear oil specifically for the transfer case. On the Pathfinder, it's bolted to the back of the transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. Crawl under the car and look for any signs of oil leakage around where the driveshaft connects. Honestly, if you're not comfortable messing with it, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. Those defective gears can cause a lot of damage.

Thanks a bunch for the advice! I took it to a local shop and they confirmed it was the transfer case – defective gears, just like you suspected. Quoted me 330€ for the repair. Seems reasonable enough. Appreciate the help!

Dude, I had something similar happen with my Pathfinder (not sure if it's hybrid like yours, but still). Slipping gears is no fun. Have you checked the transfer fluid level? If it's low or looks like it's been through a blender, you might have a leak or some serious mechanical wear going on. Gear oil problems can definitely cause those symptoms.
