Problem with the check engine light and transmission shift on a 2004 Ford Explorer

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Check engine light on

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2004 Ford Explorer and wanted to hear your opinions. The check engine light is on and the transmission is shifting all weird. Could the problem be with the transmission selector lever? Have you had similar experiences and how did you get the problem fixed in the workshop? I would be grateful for any tips.

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2006 Ford Escape. Even though I have little experience in the automotive sector, I still remember the problem well. In my case, the cable connection on the selector lever was damaged. The repair cost my garage 365 euros. It was important to act quickly to avoid further damage. I had to fork out a bit, but at least my car is now running perfectly again. To help you better, could you provide some more information about your vehicle? Something like mileage, transmission type and if the Ford Explorer shows any other signs of problems could be helpful. Hope that helps you out, buddy.

Hey, my car has over 83272 km on the clock, the last service was also just done. It just came out of nowhere, no other problems or indications, you know? Your experience sounds pretty similar to mine, maybe it's the cable too. I'll definitely get it checked at the garage before it gets worse. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for, right? Looks like your Ford Explorer was running relatively well before this problem came up. I'm sure it's really annoying that something like this is happening all of a sudden. But don't panic, your garage will have identified and repaired it quickly. Of course, it's not an absolute sure bet that it's the same problem as my Ford Escape, but the symptoms sound very similar. Make sure you get it checked professionally to avoid major damage. Since you just had a service, it's a bit odd that they didn't notice anything, but these things happen. Good luck with the repair! Keep me posted on how it goes!

Hey, thanks for the quick and detailed reply. Yeah, it's really annoying because the car has been running really well and apparently without warning this problem has cropped up. I will go to the garage as soon as possible to have the cable on the gear selector checked. You're absolutely right, the risks of further and potentially major damage are definitely not worth it to save money. It's really strange that the garage didn't notice this problem at the last service, but sometimes even the professionals overlook something. Thanks again for the support and I'll keep you posted!
