Problems with Mini Roadster 2014: Symptoms and suggested solutions for idle control errors

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Stalling while idling

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Car won't start

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hello, repair professionals! My 2014 Mini Roadster with gasoline engine has been doing strange things recently. Black smoke when accelerating, indicator light comes on, engine switches off by itself, loss of power, rough running, jerking when accelerating, starting problems, stalling when idling and shaking when idling are the symptoms. I suspect that the idle control could be faulty somehow. Have any of you had similar experiences and could give me some troubleshooting tips? Would like to know how your garage solved the problem. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, I'm not a car specialist. But I had a similar problem with my 2012 Mini Cabrio. It turned out that the problem was a faulty cable/connector on the idle control valve. I had this repaired at a garage and it cost me 155 euros. You could check this as a possible problem. Do you know if there are any fault codes on your trip computer? That could provide further clues as to the exact cause of the problem.

Hello, thanks for your tip. That could well be the problem. Error codes are there, but only P0171 and P0174, which are lean mix codes. Was the cable/plug on the idle control valve the only thing that needed to be repaired? At my last service at 68346 km everything was actually checked, but the problem occurred afterwards. It looks like I need to go there again.

Yes exactly, on my Mini it was only the cable/connector on the idle control valve that needed to be repaired. Error codes P0171 and P0174 indicate that the mixture is too lean, which can actually also be caused by a problem with the idle control. I would advise you to have this checked in the workshop. It could be that the cable/connector on the idle control valve is the cause. And you know how it is with cars - sometimes problems just occur unexpectedly, even if everything was OK at the last inspection. Good luck with that!

Thanks for your feedback and advice. I think I will have the plug and cable on the idle control valve checked. Hopefully that's the only problem. Yes, you're right - cars can be very unpredictable sometimes. I'll get back to you as soon as there's any news. Thanks again for your help!
