Problems with Opel Tigra 2010: Unsteady engine running, accelerated valves and suspected faulty camshaft phaser

Metal shavings in oil

Loss of engine power

Weird engine noise

Valve adjustment noise

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Opel Tigra built in 2010. The engine runs rough, doesn't pull properly and jerks when accelerating. In addition, there is a strange engine noise, valve adjustment noises, poor fuel consumption and the sight of metal shavings in the oil. The check engine light is also on. I suspect a faulty camshaft phaser. Have any of you ever had similar symptoms and could give me some advice on how to isolate and rectify the problem? I am very keen to hear your experiences and solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my 2008 Opel Corsa. As you may have guessed, it could be the camshaft phaser. I'm not a car expert, but I do have some experience in this area. When I noticed similar symptoms on my Corsa, I went to a trustworthy garage. They carried out a diagnosis and established that it really was the camshaft phaser. The repair cost me 1260.0 euros at the time. To provide more precise information, it would be helpful to know more about your Tigra. When was the last time it was serviced? And has a fault diagnosis already been carried out? Hope this helps you!

Thanks for the answer! My Tigra was last serviced at 78088 km. I haven't been to the garage yet, so no fault diagnosis yet. Since I know a bit about cars, I hope I can fix the problem myself. Thanks again for your feedback, your experience definitely helps me!

Hey, I'm glad that my experience could help you! Since you know a bit about cars yourself, you could first check whether the camshaft phaser is really the problem. With the symptoms you mentioned, it could well be the camshaft phaser. Since the engine of your Tigra runs irregularly, it could indicate a faulty camshaft phasing unit. The poor acceleration behavior and high fuel consumption could also be related to this. As you have also found metal shavings in the oil, it is likely that there is a serious mechanical fault. This could be the result of a failing camshaft phaser. In any case, I recommend a professional diagnosis in the workshop. It could be that the damage is already too far advanced to repair it yourself. Perhaps there is a garage in your area that you can trust and that won't rip you off. Expect the repair to be expensive though, depending on how advanced the damage is. Keep me posted on how it goes. Good luck!
