Problems with starting a 2014 Toyota Fortuner: Possible immobilizer problems

Vehicle starts briefly and goes out again

Car won't start

Hi guys, I have a small problem with my 2014 Toyota Fortuner with gasoline engine. The car just won't start, or it starts briefly and then goes straight off again. I think it might be something with the immobilizer, but I'm not sure. Has anyone had similar problems before and knows what can be done about it? How was this solved at your garage? I'm really grateful for any help!

Hi, I once had a similar problem with my 2012 Toyota Prado. I have some experience with cars, but I'm not a mechanic. In my case, the control unit/antenna of the immobilizer was defective/damaged. The whole thing cost me 365 euros at my garage and it was repaired on the spot. Could you please tell me more about your car? In particular, the type of engine and the mileage would help me to help you better.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. As I said, my Toyota Fortuner is from 2014 and has a petrol engine. The odometer reads 125488 KM, so it's already done a bit of mileage. I've only recently driven the car back and forth. No major defects were found at the last service. Do you think there could be other problems with the mileage that could cause the car to no longer start?

Hi, thanks for the additional information. Given the mileage, there can of course always be other reasons why the car won't start. The immobilizer could indeed be the problem, but it could also be the fuel pump or the ignition system, for example. In my case, as I said, the immobilizer control unit was replaced. If the part is broken, the car does not recognize the key and thus prevents starting. It could also be that only the transponder in the key has lost the battery and therefore the car does not recognize it. Check whether the key is in order. To be on the safe side, I would recommend that you take the car to a garage and have it checked. I understand that this is an annoying situation, but it's better to have it checked once more than to be left stranded at the wrong moment. I hope this helps you! Let's keep in touch and let me know how it goes.

Hi, your suggestions all sound pretty logical. I'll check the fuel pump, the ignition system and of course the key. I'll also take the car to the garage, just to be on the safe side. Maybe something else is broken... Who knows... Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll get back to you when I know more. See you then!
