RAV4 Cold Start PTC Heater Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Toyota RAV4 with a diesel engine is experiencing poor engine performance during cold starts, an error code indicating electrical issues, and increased fuel consumption. Yes, exactly! The air is definitely colder than it should be on startup, and takes longer to warm through. That's definitely pointing to the PTC heater, wouldn't you agree? Did you manage to fix your Astra yourself, or did you take it to a shop?

Given that you've got the cold air symptom as well, it's highly likely the PTC heater. I'm not an expert on those electrical systems. I took my Astra to a workshop. They confirmed it with their diagnostics and replaced the faulty heater. It's probably best to get it checked out by a professional. It's a specialized area, and with electrical faults, you don't want to risk messing things up further.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I appreciate the advice. I'll take it to the workshop as you suggested. You were right, the PTC heater was indeed defective. The repair cost me 350€, but now she drives like new!

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues on my old Vauxhall Astra, though that was a petrol engine. Cold starts were rough, and the fuel consumption took a hit. In my case it turned out to be a faulty auxiliary heater as well, draining power. It's there to give the engine a bit of assistance when it's cold. Does your RAV4 blow cold air initially, before warming up slowly?
