RAV4 Immobilizer Fault
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Toyota RAV4 with a diesel engine experienced starting issues, where the engine would briefly fire and then die, with an immobilizer fault stored in the error memory. The problem was suspected to be related to key programming, as the issue persisted with both the main and spare keys. The suggested solution was to have the keys reprogrammed at a workshop, which resolved the issue.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it cranks. And I have tried with the spare key, same thing happens, starts just for a second and then stops immediately. So, you really think it's the key programming?

Okay, if it cranks and does the same thing with both keys, it really does sound like the immobilizer is kicking in and shutting things down. Given that, and the error code you're seeing, yeah, I'd bet it's a key programming issue. But there is not much you can do yourself. The immobilizer system is pretty locked down to prevent theft. You will probably need to take it to a workshop with the diagnostic equipment to recode your keys. Cost me 45€, solved all my issues.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to the workshop and indeed after the key was reprogrammed everything works fine now.

RAV4 immobilizer problems, eh? I had something similar happen with my RAV4. Does it crank at all, or just nothing? Could be a dodgy key signal. Have you tried your spare key? Sometimes that can rule out if it's just a key issue or something more serious with the immobilizer itself. Don't go straight for immobilizer bypass until you've exhausted all other possibilities!
