S10 rough engine and jerking acceleration

Hey, I'm having a strange issue with my 2004 Chevy S10, gasoline engine, with about 150k km on it. The engine is running rough, almost like it's uneven, and the check engine light is on. I also feel some jerking when I accelerate. I checked for any obvious loose connections, but couldn't find anything. Anyone have similar experiences?

Summary of the thread

The 2004 Chevy S10 is experiencing rough engine performance and jerking during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The issue is suspected to be an engine misfire, potentially caused by a leak in the exhaust system affecting oxygen sensor readings and fuel mixture. The error code P0171, indicating a lean system, confirmed the suspicion of an exhaust leak, which was subsequently verified and repaired by a mechanic.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar problem with my S10. The symptoms sound familiar - check engine light and jerking acceleration. Does it feel like an engine misfire? Do you know the error code stored? It could also be related to your oxygen sensor. But before you start replacing parts, inspect your exhaust system.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, it does feel like an engine misfire. I will check the error code tomorrow. Where on the exhaust system should I be looking for a leak, and would that cause these symptoms?

A leak anywhere in the exhaust system before the catalytic converter can cause those symptoms, as it messes with the oxygen sensor readings and throws off the fuel mixture. Check the exhaust manifold gasket, and all the pipe connections. However, it can be hard to find. It's best to take it to a workshop, so they can test it properly.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I checked the error code (P0171, system too lean) and you were right, it seems to be related to a leak in the exhaust system. I took it to my local mechanic and they confirmed it. Repair cost was 265€.
