Saxo automatic transmission shifting issues

Alright Saxo experts, I've got a head-scratcher. My 2002 Citroen Saxo, gasoline engine, with 217419 km on the clock is acting up. The automatic transmission is shifting all kinds of wrong, the transmission indicator light is mocking me, and it's basically stuck in emergency mode. I'm suspecting undervoltage, maybe related to worn-out transmission oil. Any ideas before I start tearing things apart?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Citroen Saxo is experiencing automatic transmission shifting issues, with the transmission indicator light on and the car stuck in emergency mode. The suspected causes include undervoltage and worn-out transmission oil. Suggested solutions involve checking the hydraulic fluid levels and possibly replacing the transmission oil. A workshop visit is recommended for a proper diagnosis, as the issue could also involve the electronic control unit (ECU). Ultimately, replacing the transmission oil and checking the electrical system resolved the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I've had a similar experience with my Saxo (though mine's a bit older). The implausible shifting and emergency mode definitely ring a bell. Have you checked the hydraulic fluid levels? Low fluid can cause havoc with the automatic transmission. It might also be worth getting the car transmission checked for problems to rule out any serious damage before doing something more drastic

Interesting! Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked the hydraulic fluid level yet, that's a good shout. When you had the issue, did you also notice the 'automatic transmission does not shift as usual' symptom before it went fully into emergency mode? Also, have you changed the car transmission fluid? It's not the first time this problem occurred and I'm starting to think it's more complicated than that.

Yep, the 'not shifting as usual' was definitely a warning sign for me. It started subtly and then escalated pretty quickly to emergency mode. The undervoltage can affect the electronic control unit (ECU) that manages the transmission, causing all sorts of weird behavior. I'd advise taking it to a workshop with experience in automatic transmissions as they can correctly diagnose the problem. They'll probably recommend an oil replacement, but best to get it checked properly. If it's the ECU, it may be a costly repair.

Great, thanks for confirming! I'll get it checked out by a workshop. Turns out it was indeed related to worn-out transmission oil and the low voltage situation. They replaced the oil, checked the electrical system, and the shifting issues are gone. Total cost: 240€ Thanks again for the advice!
