Seeking Advice on 2017 Mazda CX5 Diesel Check Engine Light and Performance Issues: Suspected Intake Air Temperature Sensor Problem

Hey guys, got a bit of a puzzle here with my 2017 Mazda CX5 Diesel that's been acting up. I've been seeing the check engine light, the power seems to be dipping, there's some engine instability, a bit of a jerking when accelerating, and it's guzzling more fuel than usual. I'm suspecting it might be a dodgy intake air temperature sensor signal but I'd appreciate any advice or experiences you've had with this. Specifically, I'm keen to hear how you got it fixed, what your workshop experience was like, and if there were any peculiarities I should be aware of. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Mazda CX5 Diesel is experiencing issues such as a check engine light, power loss, engine instability, jerking during acceleration, and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is a faulty intake air temperature sensor. A similar case with a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback was resolved by replacing the defective sensor, which improved performance and fuel efficiency. It is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a reliable workshop to confirm the issue and potentially replace the sensor to resolve the problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there, I had a closer issue with my 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback. I'd describe my level of car expertise as some experience. When I started seeing similar symptoms, I took it to my local garage. Funny enough, the diagnosis was a defective intake air temperature sensor, just like your suspicion. The mechanic was really hands-on, shared his findings and even showed me the problematic part. All in, the repair cost was 155€. I initially thought it was on the high side, but the improvement in performance was indeed worth every penny. Just out of curiosity, have you done any recent mods or maintenance work on your Mazda CX5 Diesel? It would be helpful to understand a bit more on what could have led to this, and what might be considered in getting it fixed. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the response pretty insightful. To answer your question, I haven't done any recent mods or maintenance work on my Mazda CX5 Diesel. I just do regular service which I did last around 5k km ago - so it was at 190k km. Since then, the car has racked up quite some mileage (now at 195960 km). Not sure if this has to do with the problem, but certainly interesting to find out if it does. Appreciate the shared experience on this, thanks again! Cheers!

Hi again, glad to add any insight. Looking at your situation, my gut feeling is the symptom may not be directly linked to recent maintenance work or the mileage on your CX5, although it's never harm ruling that out. High mileage can potentially accelerate wear and tear on certain components, but an intake air temperature sensor usually isn't one of them. Just to share, after my own repair, I had no problems on any trips, long or short, and it felt like a major improvement. The fuel efficiency was notably better and the jerking or drop in power completely disappeared. The check engine light was gone as well. I'd recommend taking your CX5 into a trustworthy workshop and having them look into it, especially the intake air temperature sensor, which seemed to be the culprit in my case. Surprisingly, the cost can be well worth it to clear all the undesirable engine behaviors! Cheers and good luck with the fix!

Hey, thanks again for the helpful input! It's good to hear the repair made a notable difference for you. I'll definitely consider checking out a reliable workshop for a closer look at that intake air temperature sensor. If this can bring those awful engine signs to a halt, then count me in for the cost! It's all about keeping the Mazda in good nick, isn't it? Thanks for all the advice given, really appreciate it. Cheers and safe driving!
