Skoda Praktik auto transmission issues

I'm having some serious issues with my 2009 Skoda Praktik with a gasoline engine. The check engine light and the transmission indicator light are both on. The automatic transmission feels like it's slipping, and the gear shifts are really unclean. Also, I'm hearing some grinding noises when it shifts gears. I hooked it up to a code reader and got an error pointing to a defective automatic transmission converter. Could this be converter failure? Has anyone experienced similar auto transmission problems?

Summary of the thread

The 2009 Skoda Praktik with a gasoline engine is experiencing issues with the check engine and transmission indicator lights on, along with slipping and unclean gear shifts accompanied by grinding noises. The problem is likely due to a defective automatic transmission converter, as indicated by a diagnostic code. The torque converter, responsible for transferring power from the engine to the transmission, may be failing internally, causing these symptoms. The recommended solution is to have a professional mechanic diagnose and replace the faulty converter, which resolved the issue in this case.

Sounds like a torque converter issue in your automatic gearbox, alright. Does the engine surge a bit when it feels like it's slipping? Is the grinding noise constant, or just during certain gear changes?

Yeah, there is a bit of an engine surge when it slips. And the grinding is mostly when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. What exactly does the torque converter do, and why would it cause these problems? Is it something I can check myself?

Okay, engine surge and grinding between 2nd and 3rd definitely points to the converter. The torque converter is like a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the auto transmission. If it fails internally, it can cause slipping and noise. Unfortunately, it’s not really a DIY fix. Usually requires specialist tools and knowledge to diagnose and replace. I'd suggest taking it to a reputable mechanic to confirm the diagnosis and get a quote.

Took the Praktik to a trusted mechanic. You were spot on – it was the automatic transmission converter. Had to get it replaced, cost me around 2120€. Ouch! But at least it's running smoothly now. Thanks again for your help!
