Spin NOx Catalyst Aging and Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Chevrolet Spin with a gasoline engine displayed a check engine light, indicating an error related to NOx storage catalyst aging. Additionally, there was a noticeable rich-smelling exhaust leak. The issue was likely connected to a faulty seal or exhaust leak affecting the emissions system. After identifying and repairing a small crack in the exhaust manifold, the error code was resolved, confirming the leak's impact on the catalyst's efficiency.

Good analogy. I haven't done a super thorough check, just a quick visual. If it is a small leak, would that aging code trigger prematurely? Wondering if I'm chasing a ghost here, or if fixing the leak is the key.

Highly likely. The NOx catalyst relies on precise exhaust gas composition. A leak throws off the readings, making it think the catalyst is failing. Get the exhaust leak sorted. If the code persists after that, then worry about the catalyst itself. A shop visit is probably wise.

Spot on. Took it to a shop; small crack in the exhaust manifold. Welding repair and new gaskets later, code's gone. Cost me 265€. Thanks for pointing me to the obvious before I started replacing expensive parts.

Could be. A leak upstream of the catalyst would definitely impact its efficiency. Think of it like trying to filter water with a hole in the filter. Have you checked the exhaust manifold and downpipe for any obvious cracks or loose connections?
