Volt high fuel consumption engine stall
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Chevrolet Volt is experiencing high fuel consumption, engine stalling at idle, a check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. The suspected cause is a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor, which can affect the air-fuel ratio and lead to these symptoms. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the MAF sensor, and it is recommended to have the vehicle properly diagnosed to confirm this as the cause.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did a quick visual inspection of the air intake and didn't see anything obvious. How did you resolve your problem?

Well, after chasing a few possibilities, it turned out to be the mass air flow sensor itself. Apparently, they can get gunked up or just fail over time. I'd suggest getting it properly diagnosed, but a faulty MAF sensor seems like the likely culprit based on your symptoms. I went to a workshop in the end.

Appreciate the confirmation. I'll book it in at the workshop and have them check the MAF sensor. Will post a resolution once it's sorted. Thanks again for the help!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Volt. The check engine light and rough idling were the first signs. Have you checked the air intake for any obstructions? It might be related to the air-fuel ratio if you're seeing smoke.
